Chase bank is the consumer and commercial banking arm of the larger firm JPMorgan Chase. The bank traces its roots to the 1955 merger of the Bank of the Manhattan Company and Chase National Bank. The two older banks were founded in 1799 and 1877, respectively. Chase Manhattan Bank was purchased by Chemical Bank of New York in 1996. The new, larger Chase bank in turn purchased J. P. Morgan in 2000. Following its acquisition of Bank One in 2004, Chase became the largest issuer of credit cards in America. Chase bank has over 5,000 branches in 23 states, making it the third largest bank in America in terms of number of branches, trailing only Wells Fargo and Bank of America.
